Katrin Koenning was born and grew up in Germany's Ruhrgebiet - once the country's industrial heart. At 25, she relocated to Australia and is currently based in Melbourne. Coming from a story of movement through language, culture and continent, Katrin is interested in our physical and emotional connection to place, and our relationship to environment. Based in still photography and the moving image, a lot of her work is an inquiry into these themes and has at its core the idea of returning to things. Katrin regularly exhibits both nationally and internationally and her work has been published widely, including in Photographers’ Sketchbooks and Hijacked III. She is a regular contributor to the New York Times, and has won a number of awards including most recently the Daylight Photo Award. She is a former Editor of the Australian PhotoJournalist Magazine, a curatorial adviser for Wallflower Photomedia Gallery, Mildura, and lecturer at Photography Studies College, Melbourne.
